Plumber in Fitzgibbon
One of the youngest suburbs on our run, Fitzgibbon has plumbing that has just reached the age where a licensed plumber starts getting calls. Homes went up from the 2000s onward on streets named after national parks, and the original fittings are now giving way. The plumber Fitzgibbon homes need for these jobs has to know what the housing and the ground here do to pipes.

We work across Taigum and the neighbouring suburbs. Census figures put the population at 6,296, with 81.9 per cent of homes detached houses. Townhouse rows make up most of the rest, and that mix shapes the jobs we attend.

How the Houses Were Built and Plumbed
Two eras built this suburb: estates from the 1980s through the 2000s, and the urban development area opened in 2009. Detached houses dominate, with townhouses on 390 of the 2,533 dwellings counted at the last census, and the walls are mostly brick veneer, render and modern composite.
Fittings, not pipes, are where these eras show their age. Houses across the newer estates often came from the same builders with the same fittings, so a poor batch of braided hoses or mixers can turn up on one street after another. The hoses behind basins, toilets and washing machines are the ones we swap most.
The first units fitted at build are failing now too, which our hot water plumbing page covers.

Stop Taps, Meters and Pipe Ownership
Urban Utilities handles everything up to and including the meter: the mains in the street, the sewer network and the meter box itself. From the meter inwards, the pipes are the owner's to maintain.
Your meter sits in a box in the ground on the road side of your front boundary. The stop tap beside it cuts supply to the whole property, so that is the first thing to close when a pipe bursts. The utility supplies a minimum of 210 kPa and designs for no more than 550 kPa.
Two more details from the utility's rules are worth knowing:
- The utility replaces aging meters free of charge, provided access stays clear and nothing has been tampered with.
- In a townhouse scheme, shared lines are common property and fall to the body corporate; a line serving one lot stays with that owner.

Storm Season and Plumbing Damage
The ground here is a mix of alluvial soil, reactive clay and fill, and council's creek flood planning maps cover much of the suburb along Cabbage Tree Creek. The February 2022 floods reached into this area, and a small storm-tide zone touches the north-east corner near the creek.
The plumbing consequences run along two lines:
- Clay that expands in wet weather and contracts in dry moves the ground under slabs and around buried lines, straining joints and connections.
- Flat estate streets give stormwater pipes little slope, so heavy rain pushes back up through yard drains and downpipe connections.
Ground that held landfill until the mid-1990s is still settling, which can pull joints apart on lines crossing it. If you smell gas after a storm, phone 000; a meter, regulator or cylinder damaged by water goes back to the gas supplier.

Leaks, Taps, Toilets and Pipes We Repair
The jobs this housing and ground make likely are leaking mixers and hoses, running toilets, burst water pipes and storm-season drainage faults. Our tap and toilet plumbing work covers washers, cistern valves and full suite swaps, while water pipe repairs handles burst lines and corroded joints.
A hose that lets go on an upper storey drips through the ceiling underneath before anyone notices, so burst pipe repairs and a fast shut-off matter in the two-storey rows. Where water appears where it shouldn't, our leak detection page explains how we trace it, and the emergency plumber page sets out the first steps for flooding or a gas smell. The full suburb list sits on our Suburbs We Cover page.
Plumbing Questions We Get Asked
Call (07) 3523 7121Do you service Fitzgibbon?
Yes, we do. Our work takes in Taigum plus the neighbouring suburbs, and this one is on the regular run. Ring (07) 3523 7121 or send a message and we'll set a time.
What plumbing issues are common in Fitzgibbon?
Age, mostly. The estates went up from the 2000s onward, so the original fittings are failing now: braided hoses splitting behind basins, mixers wearing out, and hot water units reaching the end of their run.
Who looks after the water pipes at my place?
Urban Utilities keeps up the street main, the sewers and your meter. Everything on the house side of that meter is yours to maintain, so repairs on your land are your call to arrange.
Can soil movement damage my pipes?
Yes, it can. The clay here expands in wet weather and contracts in dry, and old fill settles unevenly. Both actions strain buried lines and can pull joints apart over time.
