A cistern that runs all night, water on the floor, a sewage smell or a button that does nothing: each symptom points to a specific part. This page explains what has worn, who may legally fix it, and when a repair stops being the answer.
If the whole suite is past saving, toilet installation covers a full replacement, and our tap and toilet work page sets out the broader fixture jobs.

Inlet Valve, Outlet Valve and Float Explained
Three parts sit behind nearly every cistern fault: the inlet valve behind a bad refill, the outlet valve behind a loo that runs, and the float behind a weak flush.
The inlet valve
refills the cistern after a flush and shuts off when the float lifts to its set level. A worn or scaled inlet valve makes the refill crawl or keeps dribbling without stopping.
The outlet valve
keeps the water held between flushes. Once the washer wears thin, water seeps past into the pan, so the inlet valve keeps topping the cistern up and the toilet runs on and on.
The float
sets how high the water sits. Riding too low, the float stores less water than the flush needs, producing a half-hearted flush.
A weak flush can also trace to jets under the rim furred up, or to a sticking button. When a cistern refuses to fill at all, the same inlet valve is the first suspect, alongside a float sitting below its mark or a stop tap not fully turned on.
With the cistern body sound, fitting a fresh inlet valve and outlet washer cures most running cisterns in a single visit.

Silent Leaks and Sewer Smells
A leaking toilet gives itself away in three spots: the cistern, the floor around the pan, and the supply connection, and each spot points to a different part.
Water gathering at the base usually means the pan connector, its rubber seal or the pan itself has failed. Dampness at the seam between cistern and pan points to the rubber joining them.
At the supply end, a leak under the cistern often traces to the stop tap, known to many as a mini stop, or to the braided hose feeding it. A sewage smell near the toilet suggests the pan's drain seals have hardened, shrunk or shifted, letting sewer gas escape into the room.
A silent leak shows up with a simple dye test. Squeeze a little food colouring into the cistern and leave it unflushed. Any tint reaching the bowl shows water escaping, and one flush afterwards rinses it away because the dye leaves ceramic unmarked.
Hidden leaks elsewhere on the property start with leak detection, and why your loo keeps running unpacks the running cistern in full.

Toilet Repairs for Owners and Tenants
Only three cistern parts sit outside licensed work: the suction cup rubber, the drop valve's washer and the float valve's washer. A capable householder may swap those three, provided the finished work still meets the standards.
Each remaining toilet repair counts as minor work under QBCC rules: a licensee performs the job, needing neither a permit nor a Form 4. Seals, pan connectors, buttons and cistern swaps all sit on the licensed side of that line.
Renters get clear protection too. Queensland tenancy law treats a blocked or broken toilet as an emergency repair in a rental. The same law requires the owner or manager to keep the home in good repair, and the tenant should report the fault straight away.

Repair a Toilet or Replace the Cistern
The final figure depends on the failed part, any crack in the porcelain, the room we have around the cistern and its isolation tap, and how many pieces get renewed. You see the price as a fixed quote once we have inspected the job, before any work starts.
Repair makes sense while the porcelain is intact and the fault is one worn valve or seal. Once the porcelain cracks, the repair path ends and a replacement begins, and a loo needing one fix after another can cost less over the years than repeated call-outs.
A replacement cistern needs WaterMark certification and registration with the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme before we can legally install it. Our tap repairs page handles the same repair-or-replace call for the basin tap beside it.

What Taigum's Townhouses Do to Cisterns
At the last census, townhouse dwellings outnumbered detached houses here, 1,568 to 1,402, and the complexes mostly repeat one set of fittings.
That shared spec means the cisterns, valves and buttons in neighbouring units all reach the same birthday. A slow-filling cistern in one unit often arrives with two more booked behind it in the same row, so we carry the common valves on the van.
The pattern matters near the suburb's two Anglicare aged-care campuses, where a failed toilet cannot wait behind a booking. Whether the job is a family bathroom or a unit in a run, the fix is the same: find the worn part, quote it, renew it.

Toilet Repair Questions
Call (07) 3523 7121Why is my toilet cistern not filling up?
An inlet valve that has worn or blocked is the usual culprit, with a float adjusted too low or a stop tap only partly open as the other causes. We test all three, because a slow refill and a dead stop to the fill can share one worn part.
What causes a leak at a toilet base in Taigum?
Usually it is the pan connector or the seal within it, sometimes a dripping supply connection or a cracked pan. Water showing where cistern meets pan points to the seal sitting between them, and that repair is licensed work.
Why does my toilet smell of sewage?
The seals where the pan enters the drain may have hardened or moved, letting sewer air through. A licensed plumber checks those seals and the connector, then renews what has failed so the smell stops at its source.
Should I repair or replace an old toilet?
Repair while the porcelain is intact and one valve or seal has worn. Cracked porcelain, or a suite that keeps needing fixes, tips the balance toward a replacement, which can cost less over the years than repeat call-outs.
Can a cracked cistern or pan be repaired in Taigum?
No, cracked porcelain is where repairing ends and replacement begins. No sealant makes a crack safe, so we quote a new cistern or pan, and any replacement needs WaterMark certification and Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards registration before it can be installed legally.
